Repowering is changing the wind market – Interview with EEAktuell

12.07.2026

Almost half of all German wind turbines are now over 15 years old, many of them run from EEG subsidies. A recent evaluation by the Wind and Solar Agency shows how strongly this is already having an impact on the market: Between January 2023 and April 2026, 1,705 new wind turbines were approved, replacing 2,325 old turbines.

In the context of repowering, the generator output typically quadruples, so that around five times as much electricity can be generated at the same location. The trend continues in the current year: In the first half of 2026, the expansion of wind energy in Germany has accelerated significantly, with part of this being due to the revived offshore expansion, while repowering is now responsible for almost a quarter of the total wind energy expansion of the past ten years. Continued operation, repowering or dismantling & selling abroad?

For operators of older wind turbines, this means that the decision between continued operation, repowering, sale abroad or dismantling is becoming a central economic issue. The market for used wind turbines and project rights is changing noticeably as a result.

That's exactly what I gave an interview to the editors of EEAktuell about. In it, I classify how supply and demand in the secondary market are shifting as a result of the repowering wave, what is realistically possible for post-EEG plants in terms of marketing and why I increasingly see the digitization of the wind industry as an infrastructure issue.
