As a strong partner to the wind industry, Liebherr offers the right solution for a wide range of requirements: On the one hand, Liebherr components are used directly in wind turbines, and on the other hand, mobile, crawler, offshore and tower cranes are used, for example, for the erection of wind turbines and for the construction of wind farms.
Liebherr is the only manufacturer in the world that supplies not only individual components, but also the entire system for electromechanical and hydraulic blade and yaw adjustment in wind turbines with slewing bearings, rotary drives, electric machines, frequency converters and hydraulic cylinders. The range also includes torque bearings, which Liebherr offers as main bearings in two designs – as two-row tapered roller bearings and three-row roller slewing rings – for rotor bearings. The portfolio also includes compact full-converter solutions for 2 to 5 MW turbines.
An essential part of the cooperation with customers from all over the world is application-specific engineering for the coordination of the individual components. In the wind industry, Liebherr works with almost all well-known turbine manufacturers and has equipped numerous wind turbines with components to date. The product spectrum ranges from components for turbines from 800 kW to solutions for multi-megawatt turbines in offshore use.
Thanks to innovative technology, high quality, cost-effectiveness and a long service life, Liebherr's mobile and crawler cranes have secured a leading position in the world market. The cranes have also proven themselves in the construction of wind farms for decades. In addition to telescopic mobile cranes, Liebherr offers both lattice boom mobile cranes and crawler cranes in various performance classes for the installation of wind turbines, which are precisely tailored to the needs of the wind industry. The group of companies is responding to the development of ever more powerful turbines and ever higher towers with performance-optimised cranes and new boom systems that achieve particularly high lifting capacities.
Crawler cranes in a narrow-gauge design specially designed for the construction of wind farms can be moved along the narrow paths in full scaffolding condition – i.e. including boom and with full ballast. This is particularly economical, because device and equipment do not have to be reassembled and dismantled every time.
For the erection of wind turbines with hub heights of 110 m or more in low-wind areas, Liebherr offers specially developed tower cranes with lifting capacities of up to 125 tonnes. These are mounted on the wind turbine and are configured in such a way that the required lifting height can be achieved with just one guying on the wind turbine tower. The advantages are the crane's small footprint, working at high wind speeds and the sensitive lifting of loads with Micromove.
The group of companies also offers convincing solutions for the construction of wind turbines at sea. The heavy-duty cranes for offshore use have a lifting capacity of up to 5,000 tonnes and a lifting height of up to 180 m above deck. All requirements can be met: diesel-powered or electric drive units, explosion-proof cranes and cranes for ambient temperatures between +40 °C and -50 °C. Liebherr cranes are successfully used not only in the construction of offshore wind turbines, but also in the construction or conversion of oil and gas platforms, as well as in pipe laying and deep-sea work up to 3,600 m below sea level.
